Interview: EC Echo Chen

This week I would like to introduce you to Echo Chen, whom I met just over a year ago at a local market that we both participated in. For me, her work stood out because of the choice of materials (art clay, felt, lava stones) & shapes that she used in her jewellery pieces. All of her pieces are uniquely hand made which means, they're all one-ones. Carrying on with March's colour theme of BLUE, even though this blue collection is her last year's collection, Echo's work fits in perfectly.

Echo is an interior decorator by day working with her husband, while making jewellery is done when she is free & has time, after attending to their gorgeous little girl. I asked Echo a few questions about her & her work:

Tell us more about you & your background.

I am graduated in design from Tongji University, Shanghai.

What inspires you & are there any places in the city you like to frequent for inspiration?

I am inspired from a mix of architectural structures and Chinese art. Buildings, paintings, fashion sometimes.

What materials do you use for your jewellery & how did you come about them?

I started with materials we use to make our furniture ( wood, metal, brass....), and later tried some other natural materials like art clay. I always try to use natural materials as much as possible, so I can work on them, it allows me to design my collections without limit of shape and style.

I love how Echo presents her collections at markets.

What are some of your work tools that you can't live without?

My hands are my best tools, but I often need small very small tools for small details.

Who are some local artists, designers and makers you're currently admiring?

I especially admire Yves Klein, for the pure and deep emotions I get from his blue art pieces

Making jewellery is just a hobby for you, what is your full time job & how you balance both?

My full time job is interior decorator, working with my husband. It takes me a lot of time to give our customers the best warm and comfortable feelings from their home. I will take care about the design and colors when my husband will take care about the home atmosphere and energy (he is psychic medium). It's only at night, when I have some free time, that I will concentrate on my jewelry collections.

Tell us more about your decoration career & if any of the furniture is available to purchase?

I have different kind of customers, individuals and professionals (restaurants, lounges, offices), helping them to have a nice, warm and comfortable place to live or work, bringing a good atmosphere for themselves, their customers or employees. We have our own ateliers, therefore we are able to create any kind of furniture, in any colors and any style. All our furniture are handcrafted ,made to order and custom made.

What are you working on now for EC ECHO CHEN Jewellery?

I am currently working on a new collection, using golden and silver colors, simplistic, geometrical design, still representing my style, but in a new way, different from the previous blue collection, that could easily please much more women.

This is one of the necklaces I own of Echo's which I absolutely adore. I love the felt, the marble look of the art clay & also lava stones.

Unfortunately, Echo doesn't have a site or an Instagram account, which I would love to create for her, if I had the time. It's a shame that her work is not seen by a wider audience, but I guess it's work in progress. I can't wait for her new collection to come out. Will keep you posted!
