Turmeric + Milk + ? = Golden Milk! or haldi doodh. Have you heard of it? I've been aware of Turmeric, since I was a teenager because my step-dad used to cook lots of Indian food & still does. He lived in India for a while due to work, so he introduced me & the family to all the different spices. & Turmeric is one of them.
Turmeric is a root vegetable that looks like ginger root but more yellow/orange. It has amazing anti-inflammatory benefits & is an anti-oxidant. Curcumin is the most important compound in turmeric & is the main active ingredient. It is not very well absorbed into the blood stream by itself, therefore it needs natural substance such as piperine found in black peppercorns.
Studies show that there are other health problems & diseases that turmeric helps fight against or even prevents & treats.
A few years ago, there was a huge trend on Golden Milk or Latte. It usually doesn't contain coffee but of course it can if you choose to. The first time I tried the drink, was on my last trip to Byron Bay. The owner of one my favourite hangouts asked whether I'd like almond or coconut milk, & my response was " I've never tried it before ". So he took it into his own hands & said "I'll make you the best Golden Milk you'll ever have". It was good & it looked good. Of course I didn't ask for the recipe but I know that he used coconut milk.
So, I decided to make my version at home. It wasn't as frothy as Safya's but that's probably because I didn't use almond or soya milk. The ingredients below are for one cup:
- 245ml coconut milk
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
- pinch of black pepper
- coconut oil
- cinnamon on top
Ok, so this is what I used but you can modify it as you please. You can change the milks or mix them together, or dilute them with water. I put turmeric, pepper, ginger & a little bit of water & mixed them all into paste. I then heated the paste with coconut oil, to extract the flavours but from now on I'm going to skip this step & just mix the paste with coconut milk & heat everything up until I'm pleased with the temperature. Pour the drink into your favourite cup & sprinkle some cinnamon. The drink tastes amazingly comfortable . . . with lots of benefits! You can add honey or maple syrup to sweeten it.
& why not try a Turmeric+Lemon+Ginger Shot!! Literally just blend all together & drink one a day! Immune booster, anti-oxidant & anti-inflammatory in one hit!
Enjoy the YELLOW goodness!
